Principles of Shared Decision Making

Best practice guidelines, empirically based research, appropriate interventions, and safety are integral in quality behavioral health care services. However, these aspects are not enough when it comes to client care. The client’s preferences and goals must be included to establish well-rounded quality treatment, which exemplifies a concept referred to as client-centered care. The importance of including clients in their medical and psychiatric decisions was examined starting as early as 1982 by the President’s Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine (Fowler, et al., 2011) and termed “shared decision making.” This course will examine what shared decision making entails, including appropriate use, barriers, and implementation. It is intended to guide you in how to include the client in the decision-making process regarding healthcare that respects their preferences and goals. This course also includes discussion on how client-centered care and shared decision making include self-directed services monitored by the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), services commonly used by those suffering with mental health issues. You will learn what self-directed care entails, how it applies to certain populations, benefits and barriers to self-directed care, and resources available to you regarding these services. This course is intended for licensed professionals working with adults who have serious mental illnesses or other behavioral health issues.
