Incorporating Recovery Principles and Practices into Mental Health Treatment

This is an exciting time to work in the field of behavioral health treatment. The field has changed dramatically in the direction of operating on the principles of recovery. Recovery involves changing our attitudes and beliefs about serious mental illness and the long-term effects of these illnesses over the lifespan. The field continues to expand into areas of advancing the integration of mental health to physical health, connecting to multiple dimensions of wellness and alternative medicine, as well as incorporation of peer recovery specialists. This course will help you to define recovery and outline ways that you can use recovery tools without additional cost or time. Just as each person’s recovery journey is unique, so is each clinician’s expertise or treatment approach. In this course, you will examine thoughtful recovery definitions and models of recovery. The course will introduce you to guiding principles of recovery along with best practices to incorporate recovery principles into your own practice. You also will examine several case examples that will facilitate the discovery of how these principles can work for the individuals you serve. After completing this course, you will have a better understanding of the principles of recovery-based clinical practice, as well as an appreciation of the recovery journey for persons with serious mental illness. Importantly, you will have a more comprehensive understanding of how you can help support each person in your practice on that journey. DISCLAIMER: Even though the industry typically consolidates mental health and addiction treatment as “behavioral health,” the most current term used to identify either, this particular course is purposely geared toward mental health practices rather than behavioral health practices based on the historical origins of this field.
