Addressing Overweight and Obesity: An Integrated Health Perspective

Obesity is common, serious, and costly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; 2015), 70.4% of Americans are overweight or obese. Obesity can affect any person from young children to older adults, and there are many causes, including over-eating, physical inactivity, genetics, hormones, and the environment. People with certain behavioral health conditions may also be at a higher risk of weight problems than the general population. Increased risk for many serious diseases and health conditions is associated with obesity, including behavioral health conditions and an increased risk of death. In this course, you will study evidence-based strategies and approaches to identify, prevent, minimize, and reverse overweight and obesity. You also will learn how to apply these strategies by engaging and collaborating with individuals to develop realistic goals and interventions. The primary aim is to educate you on the need to identify and manage weight problems using an integrated approach. This course is designed for clinical and medical staff in community health and primary care settings, as well as primary care and behavioral health practitioners who work with individuals who are at risk for becoming overweight and obese.
